This study examines the process of ecranization of Tetsuko Kuroyanagi’s novel Madogiwa no Totto-chan into its 2023 animated film adaptation by focusing on changes in plot, characters, and setting. Using a descriptive qualitative method with a structural approach, the research analyzes the transformation through the framework of reduction, addition, and variation. Primary data were taken from the novel and the film and were compared to identify similarities and differences in narrative elements, while secondary data were obtained from supporting literature. The findings reveal 53 plot reductions, including the removal of several events with educational and emotional significance. Some characters, such as Masao-chan, were omitted, while minor characters were added to support the film’s narrative flow. Changes also occur in the setting, including the appearance of new scenes such as the church courtyard, along with variations in the portrayal of characters and environmental details. These modifications enrich visual storytelling but simplify certain meanings conveyed in the novel. Overall, the ecranization process demonstrates the need for narrative adjustments to meet the demands of duration, pacing, and the characteristics of the animated medium, resulting in a reduced depth of message compared to the original work.
