Abstract

This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of wasei eigo (English loanwords modified in Japan) contained in the anime series Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii (WotaKoi). This anime was chosen because it reflects the otaku culture which is rich in specific terminology. The main objectives of this study are to identify the classification of wasei eigo and analyze the semantic changes that occur in these words. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a morphosemantic analysis method. Data were obtained from the dialogue and narration in the anime, then classified using the theory of Shibasaki, Tamaoka, and Takatori (2007) for wasei eigo types and the theory of Irwin, H. R. (2011) for semantic changes. The results show that all classification types of wasei eigo (namely Imizurekata, Tanshukukata, Junwaseikata, and Eigo Hyougen Fuzaikata) and all types of semantic changes (Narrowing, Broadening, and Shifting) were found in the data. These findings contribute to a broader understanding of linguistic dynamics and new vocabulary formation in the Japanese language, especially those driven by popular subcultures.
